The financial markets began to recover somewhat after the turbulent last quarter of 2018. Most stock markets were able to make significant gains and recover some of their previous losses. Real estate investments and riskier bonds, such as corporate bonds or government bonds from emerging markets, also rose in value. Even gold, often referred to as a safe haven, saw a price increase in January. In the currency markets, the focus was on the British pound in light of the Brexit votes in the House of Commons. Although the voting results have made the outcome of Brexit even more unclear, sterling gained a few percent last month.
