«What if...»

25.10.2021

Our world is evolving. There is talk of inflation, of the trade dispute between America and China, of high valuations in financial markets and much more. A sure fact is that no one knows how all this will affect the world economy next year. However, an elaborate investment plan with specific goals, including a cash-flow analysis and defined metrics, enables you to at least think in scenarios: 'What if...'. With this simple measure, you will ensure your financial goals to be met in the best possible way – whatever may happen.

Things are happening. There is talk of inflation, the trade dispute between America and China, high valuations on the stock markets and much more. What is clear is that no one knows how all this will affect the world next year. But if you have a proper investment plan with concrete goals, a financial plan and metrics, you can at least think of scenarios. 'What if...'. In this way, you can ensure that your financial goals are met as far as possible - no matter what happens.

Focus on four scenarios

Everybody intending to put their investment plan to the test should think through these four scenarios:

  • "Business as usual": What if nothing happens and everything just evolves “as planned” and as it has in recent years? What if the global economy continues to grow in line with the long-term trend? What if inflation remains moderate and the central banks continue to support the financial markets with an expansionary monetary policy?
  • "Japan": What if the global economy enters into a long phase of stagnation like Japan 25 years ago? What if the global economy barely grows, inflation remains extremely low and monetary policy reacts with excessive expansion?
  • "Inflation": What if we face high inflation worldwide without any notice period? What if inflation rises significantly and cannot be limited significantly without severe side-effects? What if economic growth decreases and central banks must focus on fighting inflation?
  • "Upheaval": What if the world as we know it is subjected to massive distortions? What if major incidents and developments impact the global economy leading to negatively affected trade activity, to inflation and to global economic shrinking? What if the financial system is put at risk?
